Musical tribute paid to 2611 martyrs in Mumbai


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) More than 160 persons were killed and several others injured as 10 Pakistani terrorists held the city to ransom for four days.

Family members paying tributes to the victims of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks on the sixth anniversary of the incident in Mumbai on Wednesday.



Mumbai: Top performers paid a musical tribute to the martyrs of the 26/11 attack at three public concerts held at the CST station Marine Drive and the Gateway of India on Wednesday on the sixth anniversary of the terror attacks.



Hundreds of commuters coming out of the country’s busiest railway station CST — which was among the sites targeted by terrorists on the night of November 26 2008 — were pleasantly surprised to see renowned musicians perform a classical concert at 11am on Wednesday.



Four hours later afternoon strollers outside the Trident hotel — another site that was attacked by the terrorists who had sailed in from Karachi — were enthralled by another performance. But in the evening thousands witnessed the classical concert performed at the Gateway of India opposite the Taj Mahal hotel which was also targeted on that dreadful night in 2008.



“It was a flash concert and a tribute to all the martyrs killed in the attacks” Samir Bangara founder managing director Qyuki Digital Media which organised the events told Khaleej Times. “We have been working on this project for quite some time and we had the full cooperation of the police.”



Qyuki the multi-channel network was promoted by Samir along with filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and academy-award winning musician A.R. Rahman. The performers included Purbayan Chatterjee Rakesh Chaurasia Fazal Qureshi Dilshad Khan Deepak Pandit Sridhar Parthasarathy and Imran Khan.



“Indian classical music is at the core of our national identity” remarked Purbayan Chatterjee. “Shaheed Sangeet Samman (the musical tribute) is a musical communion of the people of this great country and a tribute to those brave souls who gave their lives on November 26 2008.”



Several other events were also held across the city to pay tributes to those killed in the attacks. Floral tributes were paid at the 26/11 memorial at the Police Gymkhana at Marine Drive.

They sailed in a dinghy landed at a fishing village near Cuffe Parade broke up into groups and headed to four different places including the Taj Mahal hotel a Jewish synagogue in Colaba the CST station and Trident hotel in Nariman Point.



Commandos of the National Security Guard finally eliminated nine of the terrorists while one was nabbed by the police near Chowpatty. Ajmal Kasab the lone surviving terrorists was sentenced to death and hanged about two years ago at a Pune jail.
