South Indian film actress Khushboo joins Congress

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) In April of 2010 the Supreme Court had quashed 22 cases filed against her for her reported remarks on pre-marital sex made in an interview in 2005.

New Delhi: Well-known South Indian film actress Khushboo who had quit the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in June joined the Congress here on Wednesday saying she believed in its secular credentials and that it was the only party that could keep the country united.

Her entry is bound to come as a morale-booster for the Congress which had seen desertions by senior leader and former Union Minister G K Vasan and his supporters in recent weeks after its defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.

Talking to reporters at the Congress headquarters here after a meeting with party president Sonia Gandhi Khushboo said the Congress was the party that she always wanted to be in.

She had left the DMK on June 16 after complaining that her hard work for the party had gone unrecognized. She had joined the DMK on May 14 2010 when it was ruling in Tamil Nadu marking her formal entry into politics.

Even at that time there was widespread speculation that she would join the Congress and her decision to join the DMK instead had come as a bit of a surprise.

In April of 2010 the Supreme Court had quashed 22 cases filed against her for her reported remarks on pre-marital sex made in an interview in 2005.

After the apex court’s verdict she had told the media that she planned to enter politics and indicated that she could join the Congress. “My family and I have been huge fans of Indira Gandhi Rajiv Gandhi...yes Sonia Gandhi too. The Congress is the best bet now...my family has been voting for the Congress” media reports had quoted her as saying.

Later when asked about her decision to join the DMK she had said that she had never confirmed that she was joining the Congress. She pointed out that she had said that she was still thinking about which party to join. “And I think I have made the right decision” she had said then.

Today she said that she always felt that she should be in the Congress which as a secular party could keep the country united and take it forward.

Asked about her role in the party Congress leader Mukul Wasnik who was present said the party would utilise her capabilities in the best manner possible keeping its and her interests in mind.

Things had become difficult for Khushboo in the DMK in recent times especially after an interview to a Tamil magazine in which she said that even though DMK chief M Karunanidhi had proposed his younger son M K Stalin as his successor a decision on the issue could only be taken by the party’s general council.

Her home in Chennai was stoned by miscreants who were suspected to be supporters of Stalin.
