UAE- Man jailed and fined for links with secret Al Islah group

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) An Emirati O.N. has been sentenced to three years in jail fined Dh500000 and had his Twitter account closed for having links with a secret organisation — Al Islah Group which is affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood — in the UAE.

The ruling was handed out by the State Security Court of the Federal Supreme Court in the Capital on Tuesday. The hearing lasted 10 minutes and the court’s decision is final.

He was accused of defaming the country and spreading false information about several government entities and state security procedures using a personal account on social networking site Twitter.

O.N. had told the court earlier that he had been using Twitter to defend his father who was accused of joining the Brotherhood calling his hearing that was held in 2013 as a “comical theatre”.

“I was only tweeting to defend my father and had written what happened during the hearing” he said. His father was accused of being a part of the Brotherhood last year and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Presiding Judge Mohammed Al Jarah Al Tanaiji also ordered the confiscation of all electronic devices related to the case from the accused.

O.N. was charged with being in touch with organisations which planned to sow discord in the UAE through various channels.
