(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Official announcement about inviting tenders to award contracts for the construction of Qatar's ambitious Airport City project will not be possible before the 2016-end, according to the Chairman of Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA).
The multi-billion riyal Airport City project, spread over an area of about 10sq km, will have four circular zones, namely, Business District, Aviation Campus, Logistics District and Residential District - connected by a Green Spine parallel to the second runway of Hamad International Airport (HIA).
"We are still in the concept design stage of the Airport City project, which needs to be developed further" so the announcement of the tenders will not be possible before another two years," Abdul Aziz Mohammad Al Noaimi (pictured), Chairman, QCCA told this newspaper on the sidelines of an event recently.
The proposed project, where some 200,000 people will live and work after completion, will be strategically located parallel to the west runway of the HIA linking with the city of Doha and the airport.
Asked about the Final Phase of the HIA, Al Noimi, who is also the chairman of the Steering Committee of the New Doha International Airport (NDIA) and now renamed HIA, said: "Work on the Final Phase of the HIA will begin by the end of next year, which will take another two to three years to complete the new airport project."
The Phase One of the airport, built at a cost of about $15.5bn, comprises a 600,000 square metre three-storey Terminal 1, three concourses with 22 remote gates and 41contact gates, six of which have been specifically designed to cater to A380 (Superjumbo).
The terminal has the capacity to handle up to 30 million passengers a year, which will be increased to over 50 million by the time the airport project is fully complete and operational. The Final Phase, once completed, will have an additional 24 contact gates, to take the total number to 65, six of them will cater for the world's largest aircraft (A380s).
