Pakistan to name CEC with consensus

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  Prime Minister's spokesman Dr Musadiq Malik has said the government will soon appoint Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) with consensus.

Talking to a private TV channel, he said two honourable persons were nominated for the slot, but their names were rejected by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI).

He said various sessions took place on the appointment of the CEC, but the sit-ins diverted government's attention from the issue. To a question, Malik said it is for the first time that foreign investment worth $40 to 50 billion is coming to Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Enver Baig resigned from his position on Tuesday.

Baig submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during a meeting which took place before the premier's departure for Nepal in order to attend the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) summit in Kathmandu.

According to media reports Baig had objections to the bureaucracy acting as a hurdle to implement the PM's vision about BISP.

The BISP was initiated in October 2008 with an initial allocation of Rs34 billion by the previous PPP government. The programme aims at covering almost 40 per cent of the population living below the poverty line. Baig was appointed its chairman last year in November.
