EU hails Tunisian elections as credible, transparent

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The EU Tuesday said the first round of the presidential election held on Sunday "marks a new stage in the consolidation of the democratic transition in Tunisia.

"We reiterate our commitment to support future authorities and the Tunisian society in that direction. In a spirit of friendship and trust, we call for the strengthening of the privileged partnership between Tunisia and the European Union in all its components," said EU High Representative Federica Mogherini and EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy Johannes Hahn in a joint statement.

The Tunisian people were able to speak freely on the choice of the President for the first time, a month after the parliamentary elections, they stated.

"We have also taken note of the preliminary statement of the head of the EU Election Observation Mission Mrs. Neyts-Uyttebroek who stressed that the organization of the presidential election was "credible and transparent" and that the "campaign took place in a peaceful and pluralistic atmosphere," they said.

The efforts of the Tunisian authorities and the Independent High Authority for the Elections have ensured the successful organization of the first round of the presidential election and safety of voters, added the statement.
