Qatar receives World Robot Olympiad flag

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Russia has handed over the World Robot Olympiad flag to Qatari representatives in Sochi.

Representatives from the Supreme Education Council (SEC), College of the North Atlantic-Qatar (CNA-Q) and Maersk Oil Qatar took part in the handover ceremony. The event will be held in Doha in 2015.

The representatives who received the flag were part of a group accompanying Qatari students who had travelled to Russia to compete in the 11th World Robot Olympiad (WRO).

Thirty students took take part in the three-day extravaganza and competed in categories, including Open, Regular, and the recently added Gen II Football.

The teams were made up of students from seven schools - AbuBakr Asdeeq, Khalid bin Ahmed, Philippine School Doha, American School of Doha, Dukhan English School, Tariq bin Ziyad and Mohammad bin Abdul Wahab.

The WRO's theme 'Robots and Space' reflected in the competition's categories. Qatar's participation follows Qatar National Robot Olympiad (QNRO) at the Aspire Zone in October, in which over 800 students competed.

Doha's participation in the two Olympiads is the culmination of the year-long GO ROBOT programme, which encourages students to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The Minister of Education and Higher Education H E Dr Mohammed Abdul Wahed Ali Al Hammadi said, "We were proud to have seen so many students represent Qatar in Sochi.

"QNRO demonstrated that there is a huge appetite for events like these and highlights the increased popularity of STEM-based subjects in Qatar. The students who travelled to Sochi will now be able to share experiences with their colleagues in Qatar."

GO ROBOT has been running since 2012 as a partnership between CNA-Q and Maersk Oil Qatar, supported by the SEC and Qatar Petroleum.

Part of the programme sees teachers undergo training courses of up to 30 hours each, covering robot programming and construction.

These skills and knowledge, with free robotics kits, are then taken to classrooms or school clubs where student teams compete in national and international events, including QNRO and WRO finals.
