25 November 2014: VW has confirmed details of the new Golf R Estate a performance-oriented family car that will be an affordable alternative to the Audi S4.
Combining everyday practicality with performance is something that German car manufacturers have proven themselves to be very good at over the years. And this week VW has announced the impending release of the Golf R Estate which puts a new twist on real world convenience mixed with raw power.
There are a number of fast estate cars on the market but models like the Audi S4 tend to be prohibitively expensive for most people that is unless you seek the Used Audi Aberdeen dealerships have on offer. As such the new Golf R Estate could fill a niche that is a little underrepresented at the moment.
VW's creation packs a 2.0 litre engine which generates 296bhp thanks to its turbocharger. It will be able to hit 62mph from a stationary starting point in just 5.1 seconds and will also be relatively efficient with a 40.3mpg fuel consumption rating promised by the manufacturer.
British buyers will only be able to choose the Golf R Estate with the automatic DSG gearbox because VW admits that there is so little call for the manual alternative in its current models that pushing this in the UK would be pointless.
Quad tail pipes 19 inch alloy wheels and carbon fibre trim mark out this estate as a little more than just a car built for the school run. The standard Golf R hatchback costs £30000 and although VW has not yet revealed the price of the Estate iteration it is likely to be fractionally more expensive.
The real rival for the Golf R Estate is the Ford Focus ST which has less horsepower under the hood and lacks the brand recognition that VW can command so this new hot family vehicle is an intriguing contender that will eventually fair well on the used market.
