Honda debuts hydrogen fuel cell concept car

25 November 2014: Honda's new FCV concept brings hydrogen-powered vehicles closer to becoming a reality in the mainstream.

Honda has been a leader in looking for alternative fuel sources to power cars for many years innovating with hybrid designs and full electric motors to help reduce the environmental impact of motoring.

In fact Inverness car dealers already offer many hybrid models from this popular Japanese manufacturer allowing drivers to save on fuel costs and also reduce the amount of road tax they are required to pay.

Now a new concept car called the FCV has been unveiled by Honda this time running on a hydrogen fuel cell which could theoretically be even more convenient and clean than existing electric designs.

The concept may seem outlandish by modern standards but Honda is not just creating these designs speculatively but will be launching the FCV as a mass-produced model in 2016. Its creators claim that the fuel cell will allow the car to cover 435 miles before it needs to be refilled with performance levels improved by almost two thirds compared with the existing Honda Clarity.

The 134bhp of Honda's new concept car should allow it to compete directly with existing petrol-powered saloons but with the only emission it produces being water.

Unfortunately for Honda the launch of its latest hydrogen-fuelled concept came just a day after the announcement of the Toyota Mirai a rival model that offers similar technology under the skin and will go on sale in Europe about a year earlier.

The Mirai is expected to sport a retail price equivalent to about £45000 but with government subsidies offered in the UK this should be made significantly more affordable.

The only thing that buyers will need to worry about is whether the infrastructure for fuelling hydrogen-powered cars will be developed enough to make the models from Honda and Toyota a practical alternative. Petrol and electric-powered vehicles are for the time being the best hybrid solution.
