25 November 2014: When the Sunderland-built Qashqai crossover launched in 2007 it marked Nissan’s departure from the mid-sized family hatch market in the UK. This was an area it previously competed strongly in with cars such as the Sunny and Almera but it decided that the market didn’t want this type of car any more and was shifting to vehicles offering a more rugged style.
Now seven years on the company has had a change of heart. The new Nissan Pulsar is a mid-sized family hatch which puts the company firmly back in competition with cars such as the Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus. Built in Spain the Pulsar will sell alongside the Qashqai but shares much of its technology including petrol and diesel engines. It will also feature the latest safety features such as emergency braking and blind spot warnings.

It already sells the popular Qashqai and is keen to see Nissan back competing in the mainstream family-hatch market.
