Tunisia's Essebsi, Marzouki to Face off in Presidential Runoff

(MENAFN- QNA) Tunisia's first direct presidential election will be settled via a runoff next month as no candidate managed an outright majority required to win the vote in the first round.

The runoff will pit Beji Caid Essebsi, leader of Nidaa Tounes coalition, against incumbent President Moncef Marzouki as the two candidates with highest number of votes. Essebsi gained 39.46 percent of votes while Marzouki secured 33.43 percent, Chafik Sarsar, chief of the Independent High Authority for elections (ISIE), said Tuesday in a press conference announcing results. Hamma Hammami of the Popular Front coalition took third place with 7.82 percent.

Of the 5,308,354 registered voters, 3,339,671 cast their ballots as turnout was 62.9 percent, Sarsar said.
