IICO delegation inspect aid projects at Syrian refugee camp

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) A delegation from the International Islamic Charity Organization (IICO) toured Kuwait-funded projects at Al-Zaatari Syrian refugee camp, north Jordan, on Monday.

The delegation includes IICO Director General Dr. Othman Al-Hajji, members of IICO general assembly Shatha Al-Meshri, Dr. Aroub Al-Refa'ei and Laila Al-Ghanem, the Saudi journalist Mona Abu Suleiman, and Khalil Al-Awadhi - a Kuwaiti mediaman.

They visited the two Kuwaiti model villages of refugees and the centers providing healthcare for female refugees at the camp.

Director of the camp Col. Abdurahman Al-Amosh briefed the delegation on the needs of the refugees' daily life, Dr. Al-Hajji said in a statement to KUNA.

"We have visited IICO projects foremost among which were the two villages; one of them, built by a grant from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, includes 1,000 caravans, a school, a medical center and mosque, and the second is Kuwait model village," he said.

Dr. Al-Hajji lauded the efforts of Kuwait Embassy in Amman and Ambassador Hamad Al-Duaij to ensure speedy construction of the two villages, noting that His Highness the Amir's village was built in just two months.

In collaboration with 11 Kuwaiti charities, the IICO set up the Kuwaiti higher committee for emergency relief aiming to network for speeding up the relief effort and back the model villages for the benefit of the refugees in Syria's neighboring countries.

"The first fruit of this partnership is the planned building of 1,000 housing units for the Syrian refugees in Kilis city, south Turkey," Dr. Al-Hajji said, noting that the foundation stone of the project was laid two days ago and the construction works will complete in three months.

Similar humanitarian projects are being carried out by the IICO in cooperation with partners Lebanon and Kuwaiti fund-raising agencies such as the Awqaf Public Foundation (KAPF), he said.

He extolled His Highness the Amir for his constant support to the IICO's relief efforts," he said, citing as an example the kind initiative by His Highness the Amir to fund the one of the two villages in Al-Zaatari.

On her part, Shatha Al-Meshri said female members of the IICO general assembly were keen on taking part in the relief effort for the Syrian refugees to shed light on the role women can play in this regard.

"Our participation in this inspection tour is part of the preparations for a conference on women role in charitable projects, to be hosted by Kuwait this December," she added.

The conference will be held under the kind patronage of His Highness the Amir, she said, noting that the female members of the IICO delegation will brief the conference on the experience from their trip to Turkey and Jordan.

Similar statements were made by other members of the delegation Laila Al-Ghanem and Dr. Aroub Al-Refa'ei.
