UNGA marks Int'l Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The conditions on the ground remain volatile and the situation in Jerusalem and the West Bank is still a source of serious concern, the 69th United Nation General Assembly (UNGA) session president said late Monday.

Sam Kutesa stressed on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, that in light of the recent violent incidents that led to deaths and injuries, he strongly condemn all acts of violence against civilians and attacks against religious sites.

"I call on all parties to observe calm and restraint, and to refrain from provocative actions and incitements, all acts of violence must cease," Kutesa said.

The International Year, he said, proclaimed by the General Assembly in Resolution 68/12, reflected the desire of the international community to see the conclusion of the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations with a final peace agreement.

Sadly, he expressed, this year did not bring the progress hoped for, as the direct peace talks were suspended.

The failure of the latest round of negotiations was almost immediately followed by an intensification of violence in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem he said.

The 50-day conflict last summer in Gaza resulted in the deaths of 1,500 and the injury of 11,000 Palestinian civilians, including children, women, elderly, and humanitarian workers, he noted.

On his part, Palestine permanent observer to the UN Ambassador Riyadh Mansour stressed that the international community, foremost the Security Council, must uphold its established positions and must send a clear message to Israel, the occupying power, that it will no longer tolerate the obstruction of a peaceful settlement.

The parameters of a solution have long been known and supported by the international community based on international law and principles of justice, he said.

The Security Council, he said, must implement its resolutions and fulfill its responsibilities to contribute to bringing an end to this illegal situation, recognizing its broad and dangerous political, religious and security dimensions.
