There are times in life when cheesy can be good and memorable and necessary.

While all the “cool” kids were raving to Armin van Buuren at the opening night of the Formula 1 races in Abu Dhabi the nostalgic children of the 90s were having all the real fun back in Dubai.

Decked out in their flannel shirts bandannas and Adidas track pants hundreds of fans poured into Emirates Golf Club for the annual retro MixTape Rewind concert that featured a few of their favourite 90s stars including B*Witched 5ive and Peter Andre. It was a chance for fans of the decade to step back in time and pay homage to the greatest era of synchronised dancing known to man.

The show opened up with girl group B*Witched the Irish quartet made up of Lindsay Armaou Sinéad O’Carroll and twins Edele and Keavy Lynch. Following their split in 2002 the ladies recently reunited bringing a renewed sense of spirit to the stage on Friday night as they played out some of their biggest hits like C’est La Vie before slowing things down with Blame It on the Weatherman. Donning sequin dresses reminiscent of The Supremes they spun and danced and struggled with their high notes but the audience was forgiving perhaps just spellbound by their presence.

Things really heated up when English band 5ive (though now they’re just three) brought their 90s swag to the forefront with no shame in their game so to speak. The survivors of the group - Sean Conlon Ritchie Neville and Scott Robinson - proved they still had the moves as they performed fan favourites like When the Lights Go Out and Slam Dunk (Da Funk) with little reminder of the many years that have passed since they first stormed onto the scene. Most importantly the trio didn’t take themselves too seriously and displayed the kind of humour that is required when you’re just a few years shy of 40 and still in a boy band.

But most of the audience was here for one reason: the headlining attention-loving Peter Andre. Donning a slick black suit and tie the 41-year-old started things out with a few cover songs including Pharrell Williams’ Happy and Michael Jackson’s Human Nature before closing out with his biggest hit Mysterious Girl transforming the outdoor venue into one massive reggae dance hall.

The concert ended around midnight perhaps the greatest indication of how much has changed for the three acts since their glory days. Still it was an opportunity for fans to reconnect with their youth while giving the performers a chance to enjoy applause again.
