More than 1,000 migrants rescued from Mediterranean in four days

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency)  About 300 migrants aboard a stalled boat were
rescued Sunday off northern Cyprus, bringing the number of immigrants
rescued from the Mediterranean over four days to more than 1,000, according to dpa.

The latest migrants who were rescued, who are believed to be from
Syria, were taken to a sports hall in the port of Girne (Kyrenia),
the Turkish news agency Anadolu reported.

The stranded boat sent a distress call late Saturday, but bad weather
hampered the rescue.

One of the passengers told Anadolu that human traffickers had
promised to take the immigrants to Italy for a fee of about 5,000
euros (6,200 dollars) each.

The bulk of the rescues made in the past four days - 787 - were
carried out by Italian authorities.
