Oman settles for beach handball silver in Phuket


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman claimed silver in the beach handball event at the fourth Asian Beach Games in Phuket Thailand on Saturday after losing to Qatar 0-2 (16-17 14-16) in the final.

The silver turned out to be Oman's only medal at the Games as the athletes finished their campaign on the penultimate day of the Games.

Oman had earlier defeated Pakistan 2-0 (21-14 20-12) in the semifinals on Thursday to set up a title clash with Qatar.

In the final Oman went close to upsetting the favourite and trailed only by a goal at the end of the first half.

But Qatar came out strongly in the second session to win 16-14 and take home the title.

For Oman the main scorers were Said al Hasani (12 goals) Hani al Dughaishi (10) Ahmed al Hinai (8) and Nasr al Tamtami (7).

The architects of Oman's semifinal win over Pakistan were Tamtami (14 goals) Mazen al Dughaishi (11) Hasni (10) Hani al Dughaishi (10) and Ahmed al Hinai (7).

On Friday Oman finished fifth in beach soccer with a resounding 8-2 victory over Uzbekistan in a classification match.

Oman was held 2-2 in the first period but it claimed wins in the second (2-0) and third periods (4-0) respectively.

Abdullah al Balushi scored three goals while Khalid al Araimi hit two. Yahya al Araimi Yaqoob al Alawi and Abdullah al Sooti scored a goal each in Oman's win.

Earlier Oman edged past China 3-2 in a penalty shootout on Thursday after the teams were locked 4-4 at the end of regulation-time in a playoff for fifth to eight spots.

Oman concluded its campaign in beach kabaddi with a 44-47 loss to Sri Lanka while in sailing Salim al Alawi finished tenth and Marwan al Jabri ended up 14th among 15 sailors in the Optimist boys category.

The lone girl competitor in sailing Samiha al Riyami finished last in the Optimist girls event after failing to compete in the final race on Friday.

In beach handball the duo of Haitham al Shereiqi and Ahmed al Hosni bowed out in the last-16 round after losing to Iran Saber Hoshmand and Bahman Saleminjehboroun 0-2 (19-21 16-21) on Friday.
