Some 796 illegal immigrants found in Libyan waters in last 48 hrs - official


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Libyan and Italian authorities have managed to rescue a total 796 illegal immigrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean from Libya into Europe over the past 48 hours.

Libyan coastguards picked up some 105 immigrants off the coasts of Tripoli on Friday, while Italian border control said that they had rescued 691 immigrants, whom had been experiencing difficulties at sea over the past 48 hours, according to spokesperson for the Libyan coastguards Capt. Ayoub Qassem.

Libyan authorities had been made aware by fishermen of a stranded vessel about 10 nautical miles off the eastern coast of the capital, he told KUNA.

Those on board were found to have been African citizens of various nationalities - all of whom have been referred to Libya's illegal immigrants department, he added.
