(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Challenges and innovations in the Information and Communications Technology industry were discussed at a conference organised by Qatar University recently.
The ACS/IEEE International Conference on Computer Systems and Applications, hosted and organised by Qatar University's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, had participants from 33 countries across the world.
Papers presented in the 11th edition of the conference covered topics such as cloud and distributed computing, high-performance computing, big data, business intelligence, analytics and business process management, web services, security, privacy, data and knowledge management, natural language processing, e-learning, and m-learning.
With support from conference sponsors, QU students participated in conference activities and had the opportunity to network with international students, professors and industry professionals and deepen their knowledge of current and emerging ICT trends.
Also on the agenda were a one-day PhD symposium where research students were able to present their work to the international community and develop their professional network; one-day tutorials delivered by experts; and two half-day workshops on the Internet of Things and big data for industry engineers and university scholars.
Attending the opening ceremony were Minister of Information and Communication Technology H E Dr Hessa Sultan Al Jaber, QU President Prof Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad, Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy ICT and Stakeholder Manager Ahmad Kawakb, ictQatar Chair Prof Abdelaziz Bouras, Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) Director Dr Ahmed Elmagarmid, QCRI Principal Scientist Dr Mohammed Zaki, and Qatar National Research Fund ICT Programme Manager Dr Munir Tag.
Minister Al Jaber said: "This conference plays an important role in encouraging students and young researchers to pursue studies in advanced technologies and applications. I hope the students will take advantage of the opportunity to speak with and learn from senior researchers and build their international network. Ultimately, our youth are the future of the ICT sector and of our nation. It is critical that we continue to encourage and support them in their academic pursuits."
The highlights of the conference were special ICT sessions and panels that discussed the expertise of Qatari companies as well as ICT challenges and innovations.
A panel discussion on Qatar's national research and development priorities in ICT was also held.
