Pangilinan dela Cruz triumph in ATG Tennis Beginners Challenge
(MENAFN- Arab News) Edgar Pangilinan and Romeo dela Cruz of National Steel Company eased their way into the 1st Al Tuwairqi Group (ATG) Tennis Beginners Challenge with a convincing wins in the opening round on Friday at Saudi Arabian Youth Hostels Association Club (SAYHA) here.
Pangilinan took just 46 minutes to score an easy 6-1 6-2 win against Roy Ortiz of Faisal Steel Product Company while dela Cruz slipped past Fernando Guiyab 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 of Direct Reduction Iron Company. Dela Cruz save a set point at 5-6 before breaking away in the tiebreak as Guiyab could not find his form and buckled down in the second set.
The 1st ATG Tennis Beginners Challenge was formed in cooperation with the Al Ittifaq Steel Product Company employees with Allan Branzuela and Fernando Guiyab as committee heads. Thirty-two players in singles and 16 teams in doubles categories are vying in a knockout format competition.
Meantime in the other matches Primo Tambauan of Al Ittifaq Steel registered a 6-1 6-2 win against Corporate's Jojo Dizon. Oscar Nartia defeated Homer Ocana 6-2 6-3 of Medical Services. After dropping his serve immediately at the start of the second set Ocana broke back to stay in the match but his resurgence was shortlived as Nartia won the next three games.
In the other singles match Rolando Milan of TIEPCO Electrical Company had a clinic game and finally put to an end by Rene Vic Jalop with a 6-0 6-0 defeat in just 35 minutes. Diosdado Fernandez of Reliability Engineering needed 72 minutes in thrashing Joel Avero of Arab Steel Company via a tie breaker 3-6 6-3 and 10-8 score. Rey Liclican won 6-3 6-1 against Frederick Narne of Corporate. Jojo Hontanosas succumbed in the second set due to fatigue and virtually lost his game against highly favored Marcy Macias of Al Ittefaq Steel. Macias won 6-3 4-0. In the battle of seniors ISPC's Rudy Ortiz won against Kid Manalo 6-0-6-2
