(MENAFNEditorial) The Gulf English School held its annual Think Pink Week to raise awareness of cancer and donations of nearly QR20,000 were raised for charity from various events that took place at the school.
The GES students started the Think Pink Week by holding a whole school assembly during which they explained different types of cancer, the treatments of cancer and the effects of cancer. The students also interviewed a teacher from the Primary School who is currently receiving treatment for cancer. Miss Fiona Pattinson very kindly volunteered to participate in the events and share her story so far.
As the week progressed students designed a giant banner (see attached image) and got both primary and secondary students to put their hand print on and sign it. The banner was displayed all week in the Secondary building to remind students of the events taking place to raise awareness and money.
Jenna Wright, IB teacher at GES Secondary School, confirmed: "This year's Think Pink campaign involved the entire school, and saw every level participating to help create banners and posters or raise funds for charity. At GES we want to inculcate into our pupils an awareness of the dangers of cancer and how a healthy lifestyle can help to keep such conditions at bay. At the same time our students are made aware of the value of community action and teamwork, especially during Think Pink Week."
In the Secondary School students held a poster competition, with pupils invited to design their own poster to raise awareness of the Think Pink campaign. The winners were 7GU and 7GG who designed two trees (see attached image) with the cancer research pink ribbons hanging from the tree with personal messages to cancer patients.
Later in the week students held a Pink and Blue Bake sale and had a 'wear Pink or blue day', which raised over QR 10,000 as a donation to Qatar Cancer Society and also to spend on toys, books and games for the children's cancer ward. In addition the Junior School's break sale reaped over QR8,000 for charity, which included loom band sales.
