U.S. Senate rejects Keystone pipeline bill

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))  After it passed the House of Representatives last week, the Keystone XL pipeline bill was expected to be passed by the Senate late Tuesday, but those in favor of the Canadian oil project fell one vote short, resulting in a 59-41 outcome.

All 45 Republicans approved it, along with 14 Democrats. 60 votes were needed to pass the bill, at which point it would have moved onto the president's desk. Another vote on Keystone is expected next year, under a Republican-controlled Senate that begins its session in January.

The Keystone XL pipeline has been pushed by the TransCanada Corporation since 2012, promising to build and maintain a project that would deliver crude oil from Alberta, Canada, down to the state of Texas.
Canadian officials also lobbied heavily for the pipeline, but the Obama Administration has cited environmental concerns and not enough US job opportunities in its delay on a decision.
