Cook on trial for theft of Dh420000 car in Dubai

Dubai - A cook and other accomplices at large allegedly stole a car worth Dh420000 and had its ownership transferred to them under intimidation and criminal threats a court heard.

The 43-year-old Yemeni identified as D.A. and other suspects allegedly read an ad about a car offered for sale on a popular website. They went to the owner’s house in Jumeirah where a Filipina met them as she was entrusted by her Iranian employer to sell the car.

The court heard that on the way to the Licensing Department of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and as the accused was driving the 2013 model luxurious car the suspects threatened to kill her and her baby daughter if she did not have the car transferred to one of them a Omani without settling the price. They threatened to slash her throat and kill her baby if she informed the RTA’s staff that they did not pay for the car.

They managed to leave with the car after giving her a dud cheque.

D.A. has been charged with forcible theft and making criminal threats in the Court of First Instance. The Filipina 39 said a man phoned her on January 5.

“He showed up at my employer’s place with three men including D.A. That man was talkative in a friendly manner.

We agreed on Dh420000 as a price for the car.” The woman asked her employer on the phone whether the men could drive the car to the Licensing Department and he agreed.

After exiting the area and before reaching the RTA’s department in Al Barsha the defendants’ tone changed and they threatened to hurt her and her child if she did not obey them.

A police corporal told the prosecutor that they learnt that the suspects drove a rental car from Abu Dhabi on the day of the incident. “We knew from the rental office that two men rented the car. One of them deposited his passport. We apprehended D.A. when he went to the office to collect it.”

In the interrogation D.A. denied any wrongdoing and claimed he was paid Dh500 to have his name included in the contract as he would drive the rental car to Dubai. But the Filipina woman identified him and told the investigators he was one of the men who came to her employer’s house and threatened her later to relinquish the car. -marykhaleejtimes.com
