UAE- Mother inflicts burns on child to punish her

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) When a social worker at the school questioned her the girl said her mother had burnt her hand using a spoon to punish her for misbehaving at home.

The Dubai Police Human Right Department is investigating the case of a mother who punished and inflicted burns on the hand of her six-year-old daughter.

Brigadier Dr Mohammed Al Murr Director of the General Department of Human Rights of the Dubai Police said the department was informed by a private school in Dubai that an African girl had come to school with some burn marks on her hand.

When the social worker at the school questioned her the girl said her mother had burnt her hand using a spoon to punish her for misbehaving at home.

Al Murr said the department has taken legal action against the mother. The child’s parents were called by the human rights department and the mother confessed that she had indeed punished her daughter. She claimed that she did it because the child had burnt her younger sister’s hand. However the mother could not prove that the girl had done that and hence the police charged the mother with physical assault. Al Murr said the mother had repeatedly inflicted burns on the girl and she tried to make up stories.

In another case Major Shahin Al Mazmi director of child and women protection department at the Human Rights Department said the department received information that a 10-year-old boy was often being beaten up by his parents if he committed any mistakes at home. The social worker at the school informed the department which made the family undertake that they will not assault the child again.
