Four Libyans killed, 10 wounded in fighting near Tripoli airbase

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Fighting renewed between forces loyal to Libyan retired Gen. Khalifa Haftar and Libya Dawn fighters who control Tripoli in the vicinity of Mitiga airbase, to the east of the capital city, on Sunday.

The clashes claimed at least four lives and injured 10 others, a military source told KUNA under anonymity.

Gunmen belonging to Haftar's Mohammad Hamza battalion attacked Bal-Ashur battalion - an Islamist militia allied to Operation Libya Dawn, killing four Islamist fighters and wounding two others; eight attackers were injured.

The battling forces used light and medium machineguns and anti-aircraft guns, the source said, noting that the civil aviation authorities were forced to halt traffic at the airbase which is also used as a civilian airport.

As soon as the fighting erupted military vehicles and civilian pickups, carrying 14.5 mm. anti-aircraft guns and PKT machineguns, were deployed in Tajoura and Souq Al-Jomaa neighborhoods, witnesses said.

Last night unknown gunmen opened fire at a group of youths in Tajoura killing three of them; the attack coincided with the first anniversary of Gharghour massacre in Tripoli where 47 unarmed protesters were killed.
