Fifteen minutes of fame at Dubai's Wordfest


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Word lovers get chance to read out their writings to a modest audience



As the curtains came down on the 33rd edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair book fair Dubai held a one-day literary event — Have a Word for word lovers at the Mall of Emirates on Saturday afternoon. Between 2pm and 5.30pm over a dozen people got up on a makeshift stage outside Ductac theatre to read their writings out aloud to a modest audience.



Subjects of the written word varied from ‘School Poem’ to ‘Desert Maidens’. Writers/poets/brave people who took to the stage lingered at the microphone from five to fifteen minutes reading out aloud about heartbreak abusive parents caring mothers on their death beds.



Besides the readings there were a handful of stalls put up for the day. Second hand books cupcakes yogurt stationery and journals were on sale. Some people knew about the event from before while others had drifted in from the mall.



The atmosphere was friendly and every reader/ speaker was appreciated with a round of applause.



The Old Library had a stall up at the event and was peddling second hand books. There were cupcakes by ‘Once upon a Cupcake’ and a stall called Surat selling colourful journals.



Maria Krishnan a mother who had brought her husband and eight-year old child to listen to the poems said: “ I think it’s great that budding writers have this platform to read out their work. It may not all be great. But they’re courageous to be able to read to an unfamiliar audience. That’s the main thing. I’m happy my daughter can get to see that.” -newskhaleejtimes.com
