Kuwaiti movie in competition at Cairo Film Festival

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The feature-length Kuwaiti movie titled He Was My Friend has been chosen among eight other Arab movies to be in competition for the top accolade in this year's Cairo International Film Festival.

Spanning 100 minutes, the movie deals with the life trajectory of three friends, from their childhood days to their adult days, said the movie's director Ahmad Al-Khalaf, in remarks to KUNA today.

To be screened tonight, the movie follows the choices the three friends make in their adult lives, one studies movie-making, the other starts his own business, and the third - whom the title is about - delves into a directionless life which leads him to drug addiction and eventual death from an overdose.

Screened earlier in Kuwait and some Gulf countries, the movie was well-received, said the director, staying in Kuwaiti theaters for six weeks, which is a good length of screening time for a successful movie by Kuwaiti standards.

Director Al-Khalaf teaches acting and directing at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Kuwait, having earned his directorial credentials in Britain.

In 2011, he received an award for movie directing from the government of Kuwait for his film entitled Harmony, and three awards in Britain for his movie Peace.

Although he has great hopes to win the top prize in Cairo, he said the very fact that his movie He Was My Friend was selected among a few others for competition considerations was in itself a valued accolade he would cherish for a long time.
