Abe Putin Agree to Arrange 2015 Summit Meeting

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Beijing November 10 (QNA) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to resume talks for concluding a bilateral peace treaty.

They're hoping that this will lead to a resolution of the dispute over the Russian-controlled Northern Territories comprised of four islands that are claimed by Japan.

Both leaders are in Beijing for the two-day Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum that starts on Monday Japan's (NHK World) reported.

In their meeting on Sunday night Putin said political and economic relations between Russia and Japan have been fruitful over the past few years.

Both leaders discussed ways to move the talks forward after being stalled following the Ukraine crisis. They agreed to explore acceptable compromises based on a statement they jointly released April 2013.

The timing of Putin's visit to Japan was also discussed. Both leaders postponed the original plan of scheduling the visit some time this fall but agreed to prepare discussions and arrange it for some time next year.

Toward this end they agreed to hold a vice-ministerial level meeting and to continue to explore Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida's visit to Russia.

On another pressing issue Abe told Putin that recent elections staged by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine are complicating the situation.

Abe urged Russia to take a constructive role in ensuring a ceasefire agreement to improve the situation. (QNA)
