Kuwait ranks 9th globally as to number of diabetics: physicist


(MENAFN- Arab Times) KUWAIT CITY Nov 13 (KUNA): Kuwait ranks ninth globally with respect of number of citizens suffering from diabetes in the 20-70 age category said Dr Faisal Hamed Al-Rifaee of the Dasman Diabetes Institute. Proportion of the diabetics' cases in the country has reached 23.1 percent of the population with a proportion of one individual per four as compared to the sixth rank last year when reached 23.9 percent said the doctor in a statement to KUNA one day before the UN planned to mark the World Diabetes Day indicating success of the national educational programs and activities against this serious disease.

A large segment of the society are prone to become diabetics he said adding that they constitute 18 percent of the Kuwaiti people and this places Kuwait second globally in relation to this particularly proportion.

He also affirmed that the Kuwaitis who suffer from the disease and those expected to develop it constitute up to 40 percent of the populace. Nevertheless the Kuwaiti authorities seek to stay abreast of latest treatments and innovations to cure the disease and supply treatments he said. The UN General Assembly in December 2006 announced that diabetes is a chronic and costly to treat disease where the patient may develop hazardous complications.

It declared Nov 14 as the World Diabetes Day effective 2007. Dr Al-Rifaee in the remarks to KUNA turned to the Kuwaiti institute's activities saying it cooperates with renowned international institutes academies and university such as Harvard Oxford and Cambridge. The institute is conducting this year more than 50 researches to study diabetes and its side-effects.

Unlike hospitals in general the institute which receives patients from the districts' clinics devote constant and closer attention to the case. The treatment is elaborate and extended involving feeding guidelines and enrollment in special gyms. Moreover it cares for patients citizens and residents treated with insulin.
