Gen. Dempsey reaffirms US support to Peshmerga against ISIL


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) General Martin Dempsey said Saturday the international coalition forces will continue providing the Kurdish Peshmerga forces with weapons and training to enable them fight the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL).

During his meeting with President of Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani, General Dempsey said the coalition airstrikes will continue against ISIL militants wherever they are, according to a statement by Kurdistan presidency, The coalition has a clear-cut strategy for the combat against ISIL, he said, noting that his visit to Irbil aims to assess the military situation and know about the suggestions of the field commanders. Commending the Peshmerga troops, Gen. Dempsey said the Peshmega were able, despite modest weaponry, to stop the spread of the ISIL and put them on the defensive in several northern Iraqi areas.

On his part, President Barzani shed light on the economic dimension of the war against ISIL, highlighting the need to dry up the sources of financing for terrorism.

The meeting dealt also with the efforts to coordinate between the Peshmerga and the Iraqi forces in the fight against terrorism, the statement added.

Gen. Dempsey arrived here earlier this evening from Baghdad where he held talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi and defense and interior leaders.
