G20 Pledges Support to Fight Ebola

(MENAFN- QNA) The world's leading economies expressed concern over the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and pledged their support to efforts to contain the virus.

"G20 members are committed to do what is necessary to ensure the international effort can extinguish the outbreak and address its medium-term economic and humanitarian costs," a statement released at its summit Brisbane said.

"We will work to expedite the effective and targeted disbursement of funds and other assistance, balancing between emergency and longer-term needs." The grouping called on more governments to provide funds and medical teams, drugs and equipment to the worst hit countries - Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

For his side, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on Saturday called for a mobilization of all necessary forces in the fight Ebola.

"We must mobilize massive aid," dpa quoted Ban as saying in Brisbane.

He called for money, logistics and patient care to stop the epidemic. All patients who have the virus must receive the necessary treatment, he said.

The UN chief said all health services as well as the social, political and economic stability in the affected countries in West Africa should be provided.
