Oman claims five medals at GCC taekwondo meet


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The national taekwondo team returned to Muscat on Tuesday evening with a rich haul of five medals including one gold and a silver from the fifth GCC Taekwondo and inaugural Poomsae Championships that concluded in Manama Bahrain recently.

The victorious team was accorded a warm welcome at the Muscat International Airport by the Oman Taekwondo Committee and the players' family members.

Kamal al Busaidi - who is also the national team coach - clinched the lone gold medal in the poomsae category (U50 years) while Said al Muharrami won a bronze medal in the U40 poomsae event.

In the sparring competition Oman's lone woman participant Sabra al Salti claimed a silver medal in the featherweight class (55kg) while Adil al Wahaibi and Salim al Waili won bronze medals in the finweight (54kg) and lightweight (67-72kg) categories respectively.

The national team was also awarded the Fair Play Cup at the championships where Kuwait clinched the overall honours.

Earlier the Omani team had won the best fighting spirit award at the ninth Taekwondo World Championship in Mexico City Mexico which was held from October 30-November 2. Oman had won that award competing against 49 nations.
