UNSC adopts piracy resolution for Somalia


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Security Council adopted unanimously resolution 2184 (2014) on Somalia.

The Councilآ's resolution reiterated it condemnation and deploration of all acts of piracy and armed robbery at sea off the coast of Somalia, and recognized that the on-going instability in the country is one of the underlying causes of piracy.

The mentioned matter exacerbated instability by introducing large amounts of illicit cash that fuels additional crime and corruption in Somalia, therefore, the Council stressed the need for a comprehensive response to repress piracy and tackle its underlying causes by the international community.

Furthermore, the Council underlined the primary responslbility of Somali authorities in the fight against piracy and armed robbery at sea, and urgently requested the authorities, with assistance from the UN Secretary-General and relevant UN entitles, to pass a comprehensive set of anti-piracy and maritime laws without further delay and establish security forces with clear roles and jurisdiction.

It also called upon the Somali authorities to make all efforts to bring to justice those who are using the territory to plan, facilitate, or undertake criminal acts of piracy and armed robbery at sea.
