US alarmed by reported mass rape in Darfur

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US announced that it was deeply concerned by reports that members of the Sudanese military carried out mass rape in Tabit, North Darfur.

In a statement, State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki called, on Wednesday, on the government "to end the culture of impunity" by giving the United Nations/African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and the National Human Rights Commission access for "credible, thorough and timely investigations and to hold accountable all those found to be responsible." "While we take note that the Government of Sudan recently allowed access to UNAMID to investigate these allegations, we regret the fact that initial access was denied, and after significant delays, access to potential witnesses and victims was only allowed under close observation of Sudanese security officials," Psaki said. "Such behavior calls into question Sudanآ's compliance with the [UN] Security Councilآ's call to remove all obstacles to UNAMIDآ's full and proper discharge of its mandate including securing freedom of movement in conflict affected areas." She added the Obama Administration is focused on seeing an end to violence against civilians in Sudan and stress that victims must be provided medical treatment and psychosocial support, and urged UNAMID to continue its investigations and protection of civilians in an environment free from intimidation.
