New eye treatment procedure used in Kuwait proves effective

Date:

(MENAFN- Arab Times) KUWAIT CITY Nov 8 (KUNA): Ophthal-mologists have acquired a new technique for eye treatment called Femto-second laser that has proven effective in treating shortsightedness particularly among people 40 years of age and above. Dr Sami Al-Rabeea said in remarks to KUNA that the new technique is particularly favored by people who desire not to use eyeglasses. He explained that a microscopic flap is implanted between the cornea layers one or two eyes. The procedure lasts for only 15 minutes and has no harmful effects whatsoever on the cornea in particular or the eye in general said the ophthalmologist.

This technique is better than the rainbow procedure because it has no effects whatsoever on the cornea he said adding that the implanting can be sufficient in a single eye only.

The Femto-second Laser is capable of focusing at any depth in the cornea stroma with few micrometers accuracy to create a layer of micro-bubbles.

The applied software assists in bubbles appearing next to each other allowing the ophthalmo-surgeon to develop a separation plane of any configuration with highest accuracy. The corneal flap created in the course of Femto-LASIK Laser correction is uniform in thickness throughout. This excludes the risks of post-treatment higher order aberrations caused by irregular light rays refraction improving by large the procedure safety reducing rehabilitation period providing principally new characteristics of vision contrast and sharpness.

Removing the thin flap is an easy procedure that leaves no side-effects said Dr. Al-Rabeea adding that there would be no need to change it with time or at older age.

It is impossible to view the implanted flap in the eye because it is too tiny he said. Although it is too small oxygen fluids and other ingredients can flow easily across the cornea layers without any obstruction.

Dr. Al-Rabeaa acknowledged that the procedure temporarily results in feeling of dryness in the eye spotting some blurred light layers at night time. Moreover it does not hinder any future surgery for the eye.

Up to 90 percent of the cases are able to cope with this procedure. Type of the flap can be determined depending on the case. Demand for this new eye treatment technique is significantly mounting worldwide.
