UAE- Pak minister rules out inclusion of secret agencies in probe panel

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The federal government has rejected PTI chief Imran Khans demand that an independent commission to probe election rigging charges should also include representatives of intelligence agencies.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar who has been leading the government team in dialogue with the PTI said officials of security agencies cannot be included in the judicial commission formed to probe alleged rigging in the 2013 general election.

He was addressing a news conference in Islamabad along with Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed and Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid.

Dar said that as per the constitution a judicial commission only comprises judges and the government will not do anything in violation of the constitution.

He said that nominating members of a judicial commission is the prerogative of the chief justice adding that even the government cannot propose the names.

Earlier addressing a huge public meeting at Rahimyar Khan in south Punjab on Sunday night Imran Khan said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should resign if rigging charges were proven by an independent probe commission under the supervision of Supreme Court.

“Nawaz Sharif can stay as prime minister while we will continue our dharna (sit-in) till a commission set up by the court completes investigations into the rigging charges” Imran Khan said.

He proposed that the commission should also include representatives Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI) adding that it may conclude its task in four to six weeks.

“And if it proves the rigging charge then the prime minister must resign and fresh elections should be held under an independent election commission” he added.
