UN forms independent panel to investigate recent Gaza conflict


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban K-moon announced on Monday the formation of an internal inquiry aimed at reviewing "certain incidents" reported at United Nations facilities in the Gaza Strip during the conflict between Palestinian factions and Israel between July 8 and August 26, 2014.

During the daily press briefing, Ban's Spokesman Farhan Haq said that the panel, led by Patrick Cammaert (The Netherlands), includes Maria Vicien-Milburn (Argentina), Lee O'Brien (US), Pierre Lemelin (Canada) and K.C. Reddy (India).

It will review and investigate a number of specific incidents in which death or injuries occurred at, and/or damage was done to United Nations premises, as well as review and investigate incidents in which weapons were found to be present on United Nations premises, he said.

Haq added that the UN chief expects that the panel will enjoy the full cooperation of all parties concerned.
