Sidra Applies For its First Patent to Check Cancer

(MENAFN- QNA) Sidra Medical and Research Center (Sidra) Monday announced its first patent application to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The application is for the first non-invasive method to check cancer. This procedure could make an impact on the methods of treatment for patients, Sidra said today.

Sidra researchers Dr Francesco Marincola and Dr Mohamed Haris invented the technique.

It is for the use of non-invasive Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to detect levels of the Creatine Kinase (CK) enzyme inside a patient’s cancerous tissue.

CK is an enzyme found in the heart, brain, skeletal muscle and other tissues. Cancer patient have higher levels of CK. Measuring it helps find out existence or how far the cancer has progressed.

Sidra's new procedure has diagnostic and patient management implications.

The MRI-based method needs patients to receive an injection of phosphocreatine solution. An MRI shows doctors a clear picture. It helps them assess a tumor, whether it is benign or cancerous, without a biopsy.

Sidra said this method influences treatment and patients’ recovery time. It has the potential to help them embark on treatment programme faster.

This method will also help in drug design, enable clinicians to see which drug combinations are most effective, and check patients’ intake of medicines.

Sidra’s Principal Investigator Dr. Mohammad Haris said, "Our invention will allow for routine examinations of cancer patients and improve the ability to track cancer progression by increasing detection sensitivity and delivering a high-resolution image of what’s happening inside" Sidra's Chief Research Officer Francesco Marincola said, "We look forward to the next phase which is clinical trials so that all the measures and protocols are in place before this new technique is ready for launch. We are excited to showcase Sidra as a serious contender in research." Sidra's Vice Chairperson of the Board of Governors and Chairman of the Executive Committee Dr. Mohammad Fathy Saoud said, "Innovation in patient care is at the heart of Sidra's mission and the new technique demonstrates our commitment to being a leading provider of world-class care." Sidra conducts research on women and children's health that addresses Qatar's national priorities.
