Joint Effort 'Will Help Diabetes Campaign'


(MENAFN- QNA) Joint effort will help spread awareness and influence behavioural change in the campaign on diabetes, a senior public health official said here Monday.

Speaking at a media conference ahead of the World Diabetes Day, Supreme Council of Health's Director of Public Health Sheikh Dr Mohamed bin Hamad Al Thani, said, "Diabetes is one of Qatar’s greatest health challenges.

''Action on Diabetes' work since 2011 shows what can be achieved when we all work together for the good of everyone in Qatar. The Supreme Council of Health is proud to confirm our continued commitment as a strategic partner in helping Action on Diabetes encourage behaviour change in 2015 and beyond.'' Celebrating three years of success, six major public and private organisations from Qatar reaffirmed their continued commitment to Action on Diabetes.

The unique partnership has resulted in greater awareness, research, screening, and education on diabetes over the past three years, health officials said.

Sheikh Dr Mohamed bin Hamad Al Thani led officials from the Supreme Council for Health, Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar Diabetes Association - a member of Qatar Foundation, the Primary Health Care Corporation, Maersk Oil Qatar, and Novo Nordisk at the media event today.

Over the past three years, Action on Diabetes screened 22,000 people for the condition, with the help of partners.

It engaged with thousands of people through awareness campaigns. It also supported five courses to educate doctors, nurses, and diabetes educators on the latest techniques in treatment and support.

Action on Diabetes Senior Project Manager Herluf Nis Thomsen said, ''I am delighted our strategic partners have reaffirmed their commitment so we can continue our work towards beating diabetes and helping those with the condition better manage it. This year (2014) has been our most successful with 14,000 people tested for diabetes, mostly through our workplace screening campaign, a successful Ramadan campaign, our education, and research work.''
