UAE- Pink Caravan takes message to people with special needs

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Pink Caravan medical teams visited Al Amal School to guide around 34 students and staff members through the importance of breast cancer awareness including regular self-examination.

Pink Caravan has taken its awareness and breast cancer screening services to two Sharjah-based institutions for people with special needs: Al Amal School for the Deaf and Al Thiqah Club for the Handicapped.

Pink Caravan medical teams visited Al Amal School to guide around 34 students and staff members through the importance of breast cancer awareness including regular self-examination. This awareness presentation was facilitated through a sign language interpreter and covered the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and other vital information about the condition. It was followed by a question-and-answer session and a chance for students to request a free breast clinical examination with Pink Caravan’s doctors.

The medical team also visited Al Thiqah Club for the Handicapped where they provided around 32 club members their families and staff with a similar presentation and free breast cancer clinical examinations.

Dr Sawsan Al Madhi secretary-general of Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP) charity and head of the Pink Caravan’s medical and awareness committee said: “By welcoming our teams this month these two worthy institutions enabled us to reach out to and engage with a community who might otherwise not have had a chance to fully understand the issues related to breast cancer.”

Pink Caravan dedicated two days to these institutions taking its help and advice to a total of 66 women and their families.

Since its launch in 2011 the Pink Caravan campaign has provided free breast cancer screenings to 28091 people including 6531 men. To date the Pink caravan ride has travelled over 900km across all seven emirates of the UAE including remote areas with 250 riders and 200 volunteers helping to ensure its success.

Its medical teams have provided awareness lectures and presentations at 84 different schools and universities in four years. Alongside these two events Pink Caravan is also teaming up with several other corporations schools and institutions throughout October to host ‘wellness days’ at their sites.
