Dubai: Obesity has been recognised as a chronic progressive disease by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The latest WHO projections indicate that at least one in three of the world’s adult population is overweight and almost one in 10 are obese explains Dr Uday Shankar Specialist General Surgeon Zulekha Hospital.

Overweight or obesity leads to serious health consequences like cardiovascular disease type 2 diabetes sleep apnea osteoarthritis and some cancers (endometrial breast and colon).

As per the WHO around 3.4 million adults die each year as a result of being overweight or obese. In addition 44 per cent of diabetic burden 23 per cent of the ischemic heart disease burden and between 7 to 41 per cent of certain cancer burdens are attributable to overweight and obesity.

‘Diabesity’ is a condition in which the patients suffer from diabetes and obesity together. Type 2 Diabetes accounts for 95 per cent of all cases of diabetes which leads to many other health problems including cardiovascular disease stroke blindness kidney failure neuropathy amputations and impotency.

Current therapy for T2-Diabetes includes lifestyle intervention and anti-diabetes medication. Anti-diabetic medications just keep blood sugar levels from being excessively high; it offers nothing to check disease progression and resolution. This disease often worsens with time requiring either higher doses or increased number of medications to maintain blood sugar control. Most of the complications of diabetes are related to the progressive microvascular changes which it induces in essential organs and is not halted by medications.

Life style modification like diet and exercises cannot be overemphasized. They are always the best irrespective of one’s disease and weight cycle. These measures induce 3 to 10 per cent weight loss which can work for people with BMI of 25-29.9. However most studies have proved that for higher BMI it is not an effective tool to induce desired weight loss. Bariatric surgery has been proved to be the most effective and durable treatment for obesity and obesity-related diseases. It is an effective tool for weight loss as patient loses 60-80 per cent of excess weight within 12 -18 months of surgery.

Bariatric surgery helps to improve or resolve most of the obesity-related diseases and conditions including heart disease certain cancers sleep apnea GERD and joint problems. Various studies have also proved that bariatric surgery resolves 86 per cent of Type 2 DM 78 per cent of hypertension and hyperlipedemia. Studies show bariatric surgery increases lifespan and reduce risk of premature death by 30-40 per cent. It’s not only effective it’s safe as well.
