Abu Dhabi: For the first time at Abu Dhabi Art fair (ADA) sculptures of Constantin Brancusi are seen alongside artworks by other artists.

“I would say Brancusi’s Mademoiselle Pogany is the most special art piece we are presenting at the fair” said gallery owner Paul Kasmin.

“The asking price is $6 million” he also told Khaleej Times.

The Romanian artist who at the age of 27 left his village setting on foot for Paris was quickly noticed by the great sculptor Auguste Rodin who offered Brancusi an assistant’s job at his workshop.

“Nothing grows in the shadow of a great tree” was the famous reply given by Brancusi to Rodin.

A pioneer of modernism Brancusi became one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century.

“He worked most of his life in Paris but the French never appreciated his work while he was alive only becoming famous in France after his death” explained Kasmin.

“In the US though his work was quickly recognised from the beginning that is why so many art galleries and museums in New York own Brancusi sculptures” he added.

Furthermore Guggenheim Museum in New York was the first museum to ever do a retrospective exhibition of Constantin Brancusi in 1955. “For me his work is of great beauty and extremely rare” said Kasmin.

The Paul Kasmin Gallery is one of 10 art galleries from New York exhibiting at ADA this year.

Established in 1989 Paul Kasmin Gallery is committed to supporting an ongoing intellectual and visual dialogue with influential modern and contemporary artists. It is the first time the gallery is participating at ADA which is now in its sixth year.

“We do a certain number of fairs every year and the Abu Dhabi fair seemed very interesting because of the museums opening soon here” he said. Like most of the 50 art galleries participating at ADA which will run until November 8 the Paul Kasmin Gallery has brought artworks most suitable for the future Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

The modern and contemporary art museum that announced 2017 as its latest opening date already has 200 artworks in its permanent collection and is currently exhibiting some of these artworks along with a few pieces from the parent Guggenheim New York ADA fair.

The exhibition will remain open at Manarat Al Saadiyat until January 19.
