Tensions with Moscow as Germany marks fall of the Berlin Wall

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency)  Tensions over Moscow's intervention in eastern Ukraine cast a shadow over Sunday's celebrations in Germany marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, with the last leader of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev calling on Europe and Russia to reopen dialogue, dpa reported.

'Now is not the time for recriminations. Let us work hard to restore
confidence,' Gorbachev, 83, told a symposium in Berlin just 24 hours
after he warned that a new Cold War was taking shape.

His call came in the wake of warnings from Germany and other European
Union states that further sanctions might be imposed on Moscow if the
conflict between Kiev and pro-Russian separatists intensified.

Speaking at a ceremony on Sunday at the Berlin Wall Memorial
Chancellor Angela Merkel said the breaching of the Cold War barrier
on November 9, 1989 was a sign of hope for the series of crises
currently facing the world.
