Palestinians lobbying for UNSC action against Israeli settlements

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Palestinian leadership decided Saturday to act urgently at the UN Security Council for an international action against the Israeli settlement expansions in the occupied territories.

In a press release following their meeting, the Palestinian leaders urged the international community to state clearly that there is no peace partner for the Palestinian since the policy of the current Israeli government undermines any possibility for establishing the independent state of Palestine within a clear-cut time schedule.

"Such a UNSC statement will constitute a first step towards stopping Israel's flagrant violation and defiance of the relevant UN resolutions.

"What is going on in Jerusalem, including the tampering with the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque could lead to very serious consequences and put in jeopardy the status of the holy city and the Mosque," the statement warned.

The Palestinian leaders vowed to continue lobbying this month for the Arab-sponsored UNSC draft resolution for ending the Israeli occupation.

They called on all friendly countries to back the draft and on the UNSC to shoulder its responsibility for protecting the holy sites in Jerusalem, particularly Al-Aqsa Mosque.

They tasked the Palestinian Foreign Ministry and dept. of peace talks affairs to arrange for Palestine joining of a number of international organizations and conventions, including Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, the statement added.
