Obama Administration hopes new Congress will support Iran deal

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Obama Administration said on Thursday that if a nuclear deal is indeed worked out with Iran by the November 24 deadline, it is "hopeful" the new Republican-controlled Congress will be supportive, particularly as the US has eased sanctions slightly in return for compromises from Tehran.

"This is not a partisan, political decision for us. It shouldn't be for anyone," State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters. "This is a substantive decision based on Iran providing sufficient proof that its nuclear program is and will remain exclusively peaceful. "And you know, obviously, if we have a deal done and we get to that point, we would encourage and we're hopeful that Congress would wait and assess the package as it's reached and the components of it before making an assessment," she said.

While "members of Congress, as they have from the beginning, are free to voice their views," many "don't want to see Iran acquire a nuclear weapon. Obviously the deal will be judged by the details," she added.
