Qatar- Sheikha Moza gives away WISE awards


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) WISE 2012 awards honoured yesterday six winning projects for their innovative approaches and positive impact on societies and education.

H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser presented the awards to winners at a gala dinner held at the Qatar National Convention Centre on the second day of the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE).

The six innovative education projects originated from Australia, Egypt, Finland, India, Jordan, and Peru. They were selected by a high-profile jury from a pool of 15 finalists for their creative approach to learning and positive impact on society.

'Alternate Education for Rural Development in Peru' and 'Me and My City' in Finland were awarded for using real-life models and provide hands-on training to equip youth with skills to match the needs of the local market.

The Jordan-based 'We Love Reading' programme was recognised for its role in training women to develop a love of reading in children, and provides a rich learning experience outside the school walls. This cost-effective programme has spread across the Arab world and beyond.

An outstanding project from Australia - 'The Song Room -was awarded for using arts and music to improve social well-being and learning outcomes among children from underprivileged backgrounds.

The 'Street Children: Re-integration through Education' programme in Egypt was recognised for its efforts in taking children off the streets by reconnecting them with their families and the public school system.

'Educate Girls' from India was selected for WISE awards for its role in tackling core issues of gender inequality in the education system. The project is building a cadre of village-based youth leaders to champion girls' education and become catalysts for school reform. They work within schools as well as village communities to encourage parents to send their girls to school, boosting enrolment, retention and learning outcomes for all girls.

Each year, the WISE Awards recognise and promote six successful innovative projects that are addressing global educational challenges. Since 2009, 36 projects have been awarded, from a wide variety of sectors and locations for their innovative character, their positive contribution and their potential for scalability and adaptability.
