Qatar- HMC presents awards for outstanding works


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) selected its Department of Surgery for the Best Department Award for its outstanding performance in research.

Several other individuals and institutions were also recognised for their outstanding work during the HMC's Annual Research Day 2014. More than 300 senior leaders and researchers were present at Four Seasons Hotel to showcase research efforts of HMC staff and highlighted the role of research and its application in improving patient care.

This year's Annual Research Day was held under the theme 'Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Shaping the Future.'

Delegates heard presentations from experts on topics, including 'Research in the context of an academic health system', 'Building the foundations for the future of research', and 'Honouring the pioneers of HMC research'.

Awards were presented to researchers, recognising the best work in 2013. Forty-nine abstracts for poster presentations and five for oral presentations were on display, highlighting the research culture at HMC and promoting researchers' efforts to improve outcomes for patients through implementation of new practices and treatments.

The Best Oral Presentation Award went to Dr Hamdy Shokr, Specialist, Anaesthesia, Best Poster Presentation Award to Dr Ahmed Malki, Qatar University, Dr Khalid Al Ansari, Paediatric Emergency Center, Al Sadd, and Dr Tawfeg Ben Omran, Paediatrics, Hamad General Hospital, were honoured with the Best Publication Award and the Best Researcher Award was given to Dr Mohammed Hammoudeh, Senior Consultant, heumatology-medicine.

Hanan Al Kuwari, HMC Managing Director, stressed the role of research at HMC and said, "In recent years we have been working hard to develop HMC into a thriving research centre.

"Research, along with education and health, is one of HMC's three pillars and plays a central role in ensuring our patients receive the highest possible standard of care. The Annual Research Day 2014 has given us the opportunity to come together and celebrate the valuable work undertaken by our researchers we are all proud of," she added.
