Qatar- Al Huwailah Link Road opens

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) yesterday announced the opening of Al Huwailah Link Road, which connects Ras Laffan Industrial City to Al Shamaal Road at Al Huwailah Intersection.

The road was fully opened to traffic on October 27. However, some complementary works, such as cycling and footpath, are being given final touches on both sides of the road that do not affect traffic.

Al Huwailah Link Road was developed from single carriageway with one lane in each direction without any separation, into a dual carriageway that includes four lanes in each direction, separated by a median.

In addition, street lighting (high mast) has been provided and traffic signals have been installed with cameras to monitor violations on the four new intersections to improve traffic safety.

The road primarily serves traffic from and into Ras Laffan Industrial City, especially heavy vehicles, by providing an alternative road to Ras Laffan Road that links Ras Laffan and Al Khor Street, which used to cause congestions on the expressway from Doha City to Ras Laffan Industrial City.

The 16-km road is linked to Al Shamaal Road at Al Huwailah Intersection No. (Intersection 66), and represents an essential part of expansion plans for Ras Laffan Industrial City and its environs.

"Given the movement of heavy vehicles on the road from Ras Laffan Industrial City to Al Shamaal Road, we have mixed asphalt in construction materials to achieve longer durability of the asset. The road has been designed for a maximum speed of 80km per hour," said Ahmed Shawqi El Warraky, Project Manager, during a visit to Al Huwailah Road.

Road improvement works included, in addition to increasing the number of lanes from one to four in each direction, the establishment of four new intersections - between Al Huwailah Road and College Street, between Al Huwailah Road and Al Shagub Street, between Al Huwailah Road and Khalifa Street and the intersection between Al Huwailah Road and Al Jassasiya Street.

As for infrastructure improvement works, services networks have been established, including storm water drainage, potable water and telecommunication networks and intelligent transport systems. Al Huwailah Link Road is one of Expressway Programme projects being executed by Ashghal. The programme includes more than 32 projects to build 1,000km of improved multi-track roads and 240 main intersections.
