Oman's total projects value to hit USD10b in 2014


(MENAFN) The Special Economic Zone Authority at Duqm (Sezad) is expected to become the Sultanate's single largest mega-project, with 15 projects being currently and more than 50 projects are in preparation, tendering or planning stages, Times of Oman reported.

One of these projects is project planned by the Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries Wealth, which said that the fisheries sector will become an important new source of income and employment in the country, and that it is currently planning to construct a fish industries zone in Duqm to serve local, region and international fishing fleets, which aims to increase production from 200.000 tons in 2013 to 480,000 tons by 2020 and create more than 20.000 jobs.

Meanwhile, Sohar Port & Free Zone is preparing to deal with rising demand, new industrial investments and the construction of the Oman Railway Company (ORC) project, with the port expected to handle 44 million tons a year of cargo compared with 4.4 million tons in 2007.

These projects are only a part of many mega projects currently being done in Oman, with the value of contracts placed in Oman reaching more than USD10 billion in 2014, a figure that is expected to rise to USD13.7 billion in 2015, while the total of projects contracts due to be placed in Oman in the 2014-18 period is expected to reach USD87 billion.
