EU welcomes agreement on formation of new gov't in Yemen

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The EU Monday welcomed Saturday's announcement that all of Yemen's main political factions have signed an agreement mandating the president and prime minister to form a new government rapidly.

"We continue to support the efforts of Yemeni political forces, led by President (Abd-Rabbu Mansour) Hadi and Prime Minister (Khaled) Bahah, in implementing the provisions of the September 21 Peace and National Partnership Agreement, including the formation of a government, in line with the National Dialogue Conference's (NDC) outcomes and the GCC Initiative," said Catherine Ray, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini.

Ray said that all Yemenis have an important role to play in working peacefully to form a government that can meet the aspirations of the Yemeni people and continue to pursue the key steps of the country's political transition.

The EU also condemned recent violence, in particular the assassination in the capital Sanaa of Mohammad Abdulmaled Al-Mutawakel, secretary-general of the Union of Popular Forces party.
