Qatar Stresses Belief in Human Rights Protection


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) New YorkOctober 30 (QNA) - Qatar affirmed its belief in the importance of respecting protecting promoting and safeguarding human rights as a strategic choice through its wide strides in this area as it ratified a number of regional and international conventions related human rights.



Alanood Qassim Al-Tamimi third secretary of Qatar's permanent mission to the United Nations made the remarks in a statement before the third committee on item no. 69 on the promotion and protection of human rights.



She said that Qatar's keenness and attention to protect human rights is clearly reflected in Qatar's National Human Rights Day which is celebrated by on November 10 every year as a national event that embodies Qatar National Vision 2030 which includes several important issues related to key human rights issues a matter that reflects attention given by the wise leadership of the state to the promotion protection and enrichment of the human rights as an integral part of the country's identity and culture.



A number of governmental and non-governmental organizations and institutions concerned with human rights have been established at the Foreign Ministry's Human Rights Department National Human Rights Committee Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue Doha Centre for Media Freedom with all of them playing a pivotal role in promoting human rights the Qatari diplomat added.



In the context of its growing attention towards promoting and protecting human rights Qatar has hosted the United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region to operate under the auspices of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights she said.



She added that the report of the U.N. secretary general stressed the important role of the center in capacity-building and its role as a key factor in the promotion of the existing approach to human rights in order to to combat human trafficking in the region.



In this regard she noted that Qatar is preparing to submit a draft resolution to the third committee about the center and is looking forward for support of U.N. member states to the draft decision.



The Qatari diplomat pointed to the broad international tribute Qatar received for its efforts to promote and protect human rights as well as providing an open invitation to United States' friends and its reception to the U.N. special rapporteurs during the review of the its second national report to the U.N. Human Rights Council under the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism.



As Qatar is elected for the third time to Human Rights Council membership the Qatari diplomat said it reaffirms its keenness to fulfill its commitments in the human rights field. She added that Qatar is looking forward to provide all forms of support to the U.N. mechanisms in order to promote human rights and fundamental freedoms all over the world. (QNA)
